FIT File Repair: How to Fix a Corrupt FIT File

A practical guide to diagnosing a damaged activity and recovering the track points that remain readable.

Files stay on this device

A corrupt FIT file may fail to import because a device transfer stopped early, a download was truncated, or one damaged record prevents an app from reading the rest. Before trying to repair it, keep an untouched copy of the original and, if possible, export the activity again from the device or service that created it. A healthy second export can recover details that no repair tool can reconstruct from missing bytes.

If no clean copy exists, a FIT file repair tool can scan past unreadable records and recover the GPS points that still decode. Switchback runs this recovery in your browser and creates a GPX file from the readable track. It cannot restore missing data or produce a repaired FIT binary. Use the steps below, then review the recovered route before importing it into another app.

How to fix a .fit file

  1. Keep the original. Make a copy before trying recovery so you can repeat the process or compare results.
  2. Try a clean export. If Garmin Connect or your device can still open the activity, export the original FIT again. A complete export may contain data that a repair cannot recover.
  3. Recover readable points. If the file remains corrupt, use the repair tool below. It skips unreadable records and writes the GPS points it can decode to GPX.
  4. Review the result. Open the GPX in a map or compatible activity app and check its route and timestamps before relying on it.

Common causes of FIT corruption include an interrupted transfer, an incomplete download, or damaged bytes in the record stream. No repair can recreate missing information; the aim is to recover usable data around the damaged section. For direct recovery, go to the FIT file repair tool. If the file opens but needs another format, use the FIT to GPX converter to create a portable route copy. If your watch split one activity into multiple recordings, the FIT file combiner can join compatible files in order.

Questions

How to fix a .fit file?

Keep a copy of the original, try a fresh export first, and then use a repair tool to recover any readable track points. Switchback outputs those recovered points as GPX.

Can a corrupt FIT file be fully restored?

Only if an undamaged source copy exists. A repair tool can skip damaged records, but it cannot recreate data that is missing or unreadable.

Does Switchback upload the FIT file?

No. The repair tool processes the file in your browser and provides a local download.
