What this format is

A few older platforms still want TCX. Heart rate and cadence in Garmin’s GPX extension are copied into TCX trackpoints. Power goes into the activity extension.

How to get the file

  1. From Garmin Connect
  2. 1. Activity → ⋯ → Export as GPX, then convert here if you need TCX.
  1. From Strava
  2. 1. Activity → wrench → Export GPX.
  3. 2. Drop it here for a TCX copy.

What is kept and what is lost

KeptLost or missing
GPS, elevation, time, HR, cadence, powerGPX waypoints and routes that are not part of the track

Questions

Why would I need TCX?

Some versions of Garmin Connect and TrainingPeaks reject a GPX that has no sensor extension. TCX carries HR and cadence natively.

Is power copied?

Yes, when the GPX had it in an extension. It lands in the TCX activity extension.

Are waypoints kept?

Track points are. Standalone GPX waypoints and routes that are not part of the track are dropped.
